BAKGROUND TO THE WORK WITH THE WATER CARRIER... |

“It all started in Thupelo Cape Town in 1996. I was invited to an international workshop for artists. There I made the first version of The Water Carrier in olive tree with brass details from the local junkshop.

Some time later I was a guest at the popular radio programme ”After three” with Olle Stenholm.
A retired sea captain from the south of Sweden happened to listen to this programme.

He had a friend in Åbo Finland who had a huge stock of African wood, azobé. It was meant to be used for building a dam. Instead it turned up, damp and heavy, in my studio in Stockholm.
Slowly she appeared "The Water Carrier" out of the wood. So proud walking through the water, carrying the zinc high above her head. ”Water must be kept dry!
